What's There to Do in Winter? The Answer Is...

Beach WeekIt seems that many summer guests have never been to Red River in the winter. It’s also true that many winter guests have never been to town in the summer.

It is not uncommon during the summer months to hear visitors to Red River ask: What do you do around here in the winter?

This question is frequently asked by visitors after staring up at the side of the mountain and wondering if the jeep driver stories are true about beavers, drunk on moonshine, going on a rampage and cutting down the trees to create ski runs.

Yes, there is skiing in Red River during the winter. In fact, there are two ski areas, the Red River Ski Area in the middle of town for Alpine (downhill) skiing and the Enchanted Forest located five minutes from downtown at the top of Bobcat Pass where Nordic (cross country) skiing and snowshoeing are the order of the day.

Did I Forget To Mention...

Snow. Lots of it.

Red River gets snow. Winter 2007-08 saw over 200 inches fall in town and even more than that on the ski areas. That’s over 6.5 feet.

The snowmobile tour companies will tell you about last winter. The snow in the high country meadows was deep and offered plenty of opportunities to see the spectacular scenery after an exhilarating sled ride to the top of the world.

Ask anyone who built a “snowperson” in the park or in front of their lodge room or cabin door. Red River is the “Snowperson” capital of the known universe, as well as Snow Angel territory, not to mention Snowball Land. There’s even “ice” skating for the little ones. Deer watching is also recommended.

Let’s Not Forget Indoor Sports

Not all the fun is outdoors, though. Red River boasts of great shopping, dining and nightlife featuring the finest musicians and entertainers to be found anywhere.

Of course the most popular indoor activity involves a cozy fireplace, a bowl of buttered popcorn, maybe the fruit of the grape and someone special..
