Celebrate the Outdoors

Nature Trail
The trees and rocks invite you to share the adventure of nature and the great outdoors and the sound of the chilly mountain streams – the very song from the soul of the mountains – is a love song for you.

A Wild Place

Surrounded by the Kit Carson Forest which consists of 1.5 million acres, Red River provides the opportunity to experience nature, no matter which way you turn.

There are also five areas with “wilderness” designation within the Carson boundaries:

Wheeler Peak, Latir Peak, Pecos, Cruces Basin, Columbine-Hondo.

Wheeler, Latir and Columbine-Hondo are in close proximity to Red River, making the town a good location for a “base camp” with electricity.

These areas do not allow motorized vehicles, bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels. They’re for hikers. If you intend to take a dog on your trek, keep them on a leash, or if allowed, under voice control.

If you are looking for something a bit less adventurous near town, try the Nature Trail that runs by the river from the heart of town to Goose Creek Road, or the Mallette Park Nature Trail. If you desire a real challenge, the trail that leads to the top of Wheeler Peak, New Mexico’s highest mountains (13,167 ft.) is narrow and rocky but the view at the top is worth the journey.
