George and Gloria Cooksey are the owners of Red River RV Park located on the bank of the river on the west end of town.
George is no stranger to the valley. Growing up in Amarillo, he spent most of his boyhood summer months in Red River. His grandparents, the O’Neals, owned the Zuni Cabins located on High Street and his mother, Roseanne Cooksey, has lived in Red River for years. Katy Pierce at Calhoun Realty is his cousin.
“This is where I learned to fish,” says George, “and ski and hike, ride a horse, all that fun stuff!”
Gloria grew up in the Houston, TX area. Her degree is in Early Childhood Development and she has over 25 years working in education. George has been involved in the banking business in the Dallas area since 2008.
The couple had been looking throughout the Rockies for a business and found out from RV Park owners Tim and Liz Tate that the RV park was for sale.
“We wanted something we could manage ourselves. Something small – didn’t want anything to do with a restaurant or a bar or horse stables or anything like that. Didn’t want to do anything with retail.
“We love the seasonality of an RV park and camping. That’s what drew us to this, plus we had two really good teachers – Tim and Liz. They showed us what this business is all about.”
