Der Markt Food Store, which opened its doors in 1970, recently got a major facelift. Historical corrugated metal siding was added – in keeping with the old mining theme seen on other nearby buildings. The design was the work of architect Brian Calhoun, son of store owner Ted Calhoun. In addition to the siding, the front of the store was also remodeled with stone columns, a covered entryway, an enclosed lobby. Some improvements were made inside as well.
In spite of the remodel, the market remained open to the public during the COVID-19 crisis. Some creative adjustment of entry methods was necessary, but the shelves were stocked and the market continued to serve community needs through the completion of the project.
