The Great Sand Dunes of Colorado are the tallest dunes in North America. They are in the middle of a varied landscape ranging from grasslands, to forest, alpine lakes and tundra. As a result, they offer a wide choice of activities including camping, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, sandboarding and sand sledding, wildlife photography and birdwatching. The night sky there provides a spectacular view of the Milky Way over the Dunes with the park providing free star charts at the Visitor Center bookstore. There are many free Ranger Programs available to both adults and children wanting to better understand the environment of the Dunes.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is open 24/7 year round. The Visitor Center hours varies with the seasons, closing earlier in winter.
