Horseback Rides

Horses have always been an attraction in Red River – the terrain is absolutely perfect for it. With a multitude of trails throughout the local mountains, people of all ages – no matter the skill-set – will get a glimpse of a time when cowboys roamed on horseback – their only mode of transportation. All it takes is just one ride to understand why the horse was so crucial in developing this territory – transporting you back to the Old Wild West days. Whether you walk on over to the Red River Stables or hop in the car for a very short drive up the mountain to Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures, you are in for a real treat.

One of the most popular horse ventures in Red River is Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures at the top of Bobcat Pass, with extended rides from one hour up to five and seven-day pack trips available in September when the fishing and scenery in the high country are truly spectacular. Take a ride in the beautiful Valle Vidal, where your personal guide will show you a variety of elk, deer, turkeys, and much more. You can even schedule a Cowboy Clinic to learn basics from packing to roping, getting individual attention. (Early June).

Stick around for Cowboy Evening. Try steer roping or throw horseshoes, then enjoy a fine steak dinner with cowboy trimmings, a blazing campfire under a blue New Mexico sky and great live music with the likes of Dale and Gale, Dulcimer Dan, Hwy 38 Houndogs and Syd Masters.

The Red River Stables (located at “The Y” on East Main) offers a wide variety of rides ranging from 1 hour to an all day 8 hour ride to Wheeler Peak. They can accommodate all riders from beginners to expert, depending on the ride. The scenery is spectacular and some of the higher trails offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and lakes. There are several rides a day starting at 9 am and prices vary depending on the length of the ride.
