Rockhounding in Red River

Rockhounding is an experience all in itself. It is like putting away adulthood for the short brisk
walk or the hours you find yourself in your own world pretending to be on a treasure hunt.

Red River, NM and surrounding areas provide an unlimited enjoyment of free rockhounding
fun. To azurite malachite to topaz, agates, quartz and amethyst there will never be a shortage
of rocks. After a rain you can catch me down at wild rivers looking at the little beauties as they
pop out of the ground like daisies. Getting muddy and licking rocks to see what little surprises
are waiting to be found is a great way to enjoy the skies, the fresh air and once in a while
bring home a little piece of a memory especially if you’re with a friend or loved one. But be
aware there are actual laws and private property boundaries. It’s a great idea to get informed
of these rules and laws before going out on your next adventure. Here is a website to check
out for specifics of those rules and laws and about other wonderful information about New
Mexico (https://www.blm.gov/Learn/Can-I-Keep-This). You can find it under Learn and “Can I keep this?” Also check out books at Frye’s Old town, Red River Library, and Questa Library, as they provide
great resources on rockhounding.

Whether it’s rockhounding, enjoying artwork, or having a cup of joe. Red River provides locals a
place to call home and a chance to meet many tourists who call this little mountain town a little
piece of paradise.
